Irmgard Boyer grew up one of 10 children in Franconia, Bavaria. Her six remaining siblings (four sisters and two brothers – three brothers have died, one in an automobile accident, one of cancer and one due to a heart attack) traveled from Germany last week to help Boyer celebrate her 60th birthday on Oct. 31.
The group who arrived also included one cousin, one brother-in-law and two sisters-in-law. Boyer said she knew the group of 11 was coming but the plan was that she’d meet them in Duluth. Instead, she surprised them by meeting them in Buffalo and taking them to Niagara Falls for a week before returning with them to Minnesota.
Also attending the birthday party were Boyer’s three grown children and their families. The group was expected to grow to 30-35 before Boyer blew out the candles on her German cake.
“This is the first time we’ve all been together here. I go home once a year and some of them have come to visit us here but this is a new experience for us,” Boyer said.
One of Boyer’s nieces from Germany is spending six months in Minnesota, working as a nanny for one of Boyer’s daughters. Boyer asked her and the rest of her visiting relatives what they liked about the Aitkin area.
“All the machinery, the tractors and the snowmobiles … the woods, the lakes and the hunting … the extremely friendly people … the easy driving on the roads,” were among the things they listed.
Not to mention all the American food that was cooking in the kitchen and garage. Add to that a mouth-watering array of German cakes and you’ve got a feast fit for a Bavarian birthday girl and all her friends and family from both near and far.
