Scottish clans: Jacobite societies still hope for House of Stuart restoration

THE Royal House of Stuart’s hopes of restoration came to an end on Culloden Moor. When Prince Charles Edward Stuart’s attempt to regain his grandfather’s throne failed, it’s assumed Jacobite sympathies died with the Highlanders who were routed in less than an hour when they charged against the government lines. But there were still those who toasted “the King o’er the water” though their toasts were whispered in private rooms and secret societies. And the romance continues, for though Read more [...]

Germany seeks to slow migrant flow

Germany is to restrict the number of entry points for migrants arriving via Austria, in a bid to control the flow as thousands cross into Bavaria daily, reports the BBC. It says it has reached agreement with Austria on five crossing points on their border. Authorities in Bavaria have complained a lack of co-ordination with Austria is hampering efforts to aid new arrivals. Many others continue to make their way via Greece, in freezing temperatures, hoping to get asylum in Germany. Meanwhile, more Read more [...]

Germany to restrict border entry points for migrants

However, the German interior ministry said a daily upper limit on border crossings had not yet been agreed by the two countries. "We would like to have a more orderly procedure," said a spokeswoman for Germany's interior ministry, with the new measures intended to reduce long waiting times to cross the border. The number of refugees crossing the Bavarian border remains high, and by midday on Saturday more than 1,000 migrants had either crossed into Germany or were waiting to enter at entry points Read more [...]

Opinion: Europe rises and falls with Merkel

There's an old German saying that seems to have been forgotten in Berlin and Munich: If a donkey's feeling too comfy, he'll start dancing on ice. It is indeed the duty of functionaries of the governing parties to let Angela Merkel know in no uncertain terms if her actions will provoke resentment or protest. No other issue in her time in office has so far affected Germans so directly as the refugee crisis. And since Germans hate chaos, calls for the government to reestablish some sort of control Read more [...]

The Angela Merkel era is far from over

Suggestions that the Angela Merkel era may be ending have surfaced in the mainstream in recent weeks. Partly, this is because some members of the German chancellor's own party are panicking about her handling of the refugee influx. Merkel is not about to resign or be toppled, however: She's leading an existential battle between the kind of European future she represents and the one envisaged by Prime Minister Viktor Orban of Hungary.Merkel is clearly under stress before the talks this weekend Read more [...]

Germany’s ability to act on refugees threatened, Merkel deputy says

BERLIN: Germany's Social Democrat vice-chancellor, Sigmar Gabriel, warned on Friday that a dispute among the conservatives over how to handle record inflows of refugees into the country was jeopardising the government's ability to act. Merkel and Horst Seehofer, the leader of her Bavarian sister party, have frequently clashed over how Germany should deal with the estimated 800,000 to 1 million it expects this year, many of them from war zones in the Middle East. Merkel, the leader of the Christian Read more [...]
