Enjoy the Neuschwanstein Castle in Hohenschwangau

Füssen, Bavaria (PRWEB) October 31, 2012

The town of Füssen in Bavaria is located just five minutes away from the Austrian Border in Germany. The town shares much of Austria’s culture and traditions. While Füssen is more popular amongst day tourists, as visitors prefer to take day tours of the castles and stay the night in neighboring towns and cities, more and more people are beginning to rediscover the charm of the old world in this 700-year old town. As the gateway to King Ludwig II’s two castles: Castle Neuschwanstein and Castle Hohenschwangau, there is certainly much of the old world left in Füssen. Aside from the majestic castles, Füssen also offers beautiful lake views, an orchestra, and the famous Kalvarienberg hill, which features the Stations of the Cross and small chapels for tourists to visit.

Winter in Füssen

While the peak season for tourism in the town is between the months of May to September, as a lot of tourists prefer to visit during the warmer months so they can enjoy various outdoor activities, Füssen is just as beautiful during the winter months as it is during the summer. During the winter, Füssen turns into a skiing hotspot for tourists. There are various other winter sports that tourists can participate in.

Castle Neuschwanstein and Castle Hohenschwangau are also just as beautiful during the winter months. In fact, some tourists prefer to visit the castles during the winter, as the two fairytale-like castles look much more magical clothed in snow.

Castle Neuschwanstein is open to tourists all year-round. While not located in Füssen itself, the town is considered as the gateway to the castle. Neuschwanstein sits just three kilometers from Füssen. Tourists can get there either by bus or by foot. Walking takes about thirty minutes but as the path is uphill, taking the bus might be better especially for tourists with kids. The 19th century neo-Romanesque castle sits beautifully atop a hill and is perhaps one of the grandest castles in Germany, making it the most popular fairytale-like castle in the world as it was also used as inspiration for Sleeping Beauty’s castle in Disneyland. It was first opened to the public in 1886 after the death of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. While tourists cannot take photos inside the castle, they can take as many photos of the façade on their way up the castle’s hill. Visiting this fairytale castle in the winter is certainly the perfect holiday activity for families.

Ludwig II’s childhood home is also a great destination for tourists and is one of the reasons why Füssen has become a popular tourist destination for tourists all over the world. The Hohenschwangau Castle sits just across Castle Neuschwanstein. This 19th century castle used to serve as a fortress in the 12th century and was acquired by King Maximilian II of Bavaria in 1832. He started rebuilding the ruins in 1833 and used it as his family’s summer residence. The Hohenschwangau Castle is also open to tourists all year-round but is closed on Christmas Eve and other important holidays.
