A WOMAN has dyed her hair pink and styled it into a mohican to raise money for her friend’s mother, who is battling cancer.
Sarah Jones, from Wrexham, has also had the words ‘beat cancer’ shaved in to promote her bid to raise funds for Marilyn Jones.
This month Marilyn spoke to the Leader in the hope of raising enough money to travel to Bavaria in Germany for intensive cancer treatment.
Since her story appeared, the 48-year-old of Maesydre Road, Wrexham, saw her fundraising total rise enough to pay for her treatment, and she and husband David will fly out on August 7 – the day of their fifth wedding anniversary.
The treatment could prolong her life after she was told last year the illness was terminal.
Fundraising efforts have continued to pour in as it is likely Marilyn will need further treatment in the future.
Touched by Marilyn’s story, family friend Sarah, from Pentre Broughton, decided she wanted to do her bit by having her hair shaved into a mohican hairstyle, dyed pink, with ‘beat cancer’ shaved across the side of her head.
The 26-year-old mechanic raised £480 towards Marilyn’s treatment as a result of the headshave.
Sarah’s friend Sarah Tweedie, who works at Ela V Hair and Beauty in Johnstown, shaved her hair.
She said: “I just thought it would be a good idea really. I’ve known Marilyn for years as I’ve been friends with her son Greg for a long time, and I just wanted to do something for her.
“I feel great to have raised the amount I have done and I’m grateful to those who have sponsored me.
“I’m just not looking forward to it growing back now!”
Marilyn was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010.
The cancer was missed four times before she insisted on having a mastectomy and went on to have chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
The mother of two sons and four stepchildren recovered, but in 2013 the cancer returned.
It was discovered that Marilyn had secondary cancer in her groin and in April 2014 she was told the devastating news that her cancer was terminal.
Marilyn has accepted every chemotherapy medics have offered her but now her immune system is so broken down her body has rejected it and she is now left with a life-threatening infection.
This month Marilyn and David, 49, told the Leader the treatment in Bavaria would be her ‘final lifeline’.
Sarah, who works at Wrexham Service Centre, said she wanted to stress that although Marilyn will be flying out for treatment, she may require more, so is urging people to continue to dig deep. I would like to encourage people to still donate what they can because Marilyn will need follow-up treatment and she needs all the help she can get – everything helps,” urged Sarah.

l A fundraising bowls night in aid of Marilyn’s treatment is taking place at Esclusham Bowling Club on Saturday, August 8, starting from 6pm, where there will be a raffle and a barbecue.
