Wolfgang Peterson’s Das Boot for German reboot

The taut, compelling 1981 film Das Boot follows the crew of a German submarine during the Second World War, and will be remade by Bavaria Studios, the original producers.

The original film was based on Lothar-Günther Buchheim’s novel of the same name, based on the author’s experiences on a German U-boat during the Second World War.

Das Boot – The Boat – was one of the most expensive German films ever made and went on to be a major success worldwide. The film was also adapted as a six-part miniseries and the director’s cut appeared in 1997.

Das Boot was nominated for six Oscars, including best director for Wolfgang Petersen, who made films such as In the Line of Fire and The Perfect Storm.
