Cruising: shore excursions

“The drive from Wurzburg to Rothenburg took an hour and everything along the way was laden with snow.
“They were having the best snow they’d had in about 30 years and there were little villages and open fields absolutely covered with it.
“We could see sheep grazing and people all dressed up in fur coats, out walking their dogs.

“It really was very romantic, like a picture postcard.
“I’d always wanted to experience a white Christmas and always wanted to see real snow, so Germany really had put on a show for me; it was absolutely amazing.
“The locals weren’t too impressed by it but the tourists were saying ‘bring on some more!’
“We went into Rothenburg, which is a marvellous town that dates back to the mediaeval period and is apparently one of the most famous sights along the Romantic Road.
“We had a few hours there, so there was plenty of time to look around and go shopping.
“The town has such a fairytale atmosphere, it’s no wonder it has been used in many movies. One of their local specialties is ‘snowballs’, which are treats made from pieces of sweet dough pressed together into balls.
“They deep-fry them and then, while they’re still warm, they sprinkle them with confectioners’ sugar. They’re quite hard, like a round biscuit, and they’re absolutely delicious.
“I have a sweet tooth so I had to try something like that!
“I also went up to the Burggarten, which is a large garden above the city and the site of a former castle.
“From there you can look out over the surrounding valley and down over the walled town; it was just so beautiful.”
Value for money
Jennifer’s excursion was included in her cruise fare under Scenic’s FreeChoice program, which offered a choice of a walking tour of Wurzburg or the full-day Romantic Road excursion.
“I’d never heard of the Romantic Road before I went on this cruise, so it was a lovely surprise for me,” Jennifer says.
“I think the Scenic cruises are excellent value, and they are especially good for me as I travel alone and I don’t have to worry about getting around on my own.
“I’m doing another Christmas cruise this year, I loved it so much.”

WHAT A taste of Germany’s “Romantic Road”. This scenic drive is loosely based on an old trade route and is a major attraction.
WHERE The road runs from the city of Wurzburg to the town of Fussen, in the Bavaria region. The full Romantic Road covers about 350 kilometres and Jennifer did a 65-kilometre section, Wurzburg to Rothenburg.
THE SHIP Jennifer cruised on Scenic Emerald, a 23-day cruise from Paris to Prague, incorporating a 16-day Christmas cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest.
