Serbian PM Aleksandar Vucic’s proposal to provide false asylum seekers with smaller financial support “is more applicable in practice than some others.”

This is what Bavarian Minister-President Horst Seehofer said on Monday after his meeting with Vucic in Munich, speaking about other proposals that emerged in Germany in the ongoing debate on migrants.

“I accepted that we in Germany, as well as in Bavaria, must do our homework, and we will discuss this in the Bavarian government – at this time, a debate on the issue of migrants is under way in Germany, and many proposals are being circulated that are not useful for solving the problem,” Seehofer underscored in a statement to reporters.

The Serbian prime minister urged that Germany be made less attractive to refugees by giving false asylum seekers less financial support.

During the meeting with Vucic, Seehofer gave credit for the reform efforts undertaken by the Serbian government.

However, the meeting mostly focused on the issue of migrants, and it was agreed that contacts be continued, he said.

Besides Minister for European Affairs and International Relations Beate Merk, who will visit Serbia in early September, I accepted an invitation to pay a two-day visit to Serbia as early as this year because there are exceptional joint interests, not only in economic cooperation, but also regarding the issue of migrants, Seehofer said.

Migrants, economy

During his meeting with Aleksandar Vucic, Horst Seehofer “praised the economic reforms undertaken by the Serbian government, announcing that a Bavarian business delegation will pay a visit to Serbia.”

As part of a working visit to Bavaria, Vucic discussed with Seehofer the economic cooperation, support to Serbia on its EU path and the problem of false asylum seekers, as well as asylum seekers coming from third countries.

Bavaria will send a business delegation to Serbia, said Seehofer, announcing that he himself will visit Serbia by the end of the year.

Seehofer congratulated Vucic on the economic reforms implemented, noting that Serbia is on the right path and that it should stay on that path.

Serbia and Bavaria must resolve the issue of asylum seekers together, he said, adding that the largest part of the problem lies in Bavaria itself.

The EU must provide greater logistical and financial support to Serbia in the efforts to solve the problem of asylum seekers from Syria, Afghanistan and other countries, Seehofer noted.
