BERLIN – A train has partially derailed and tipped over after it hit a car at a road crossing in southern Germany. Police say 13 people were injured, three of them seriously.

Police said the accident happened early Wednesday morning in Kellmuenz, a small town in Bavaria. The front part of the local train derailed after hitting the car and slid for more than 330 feet (100 metres) before tipping over on its side.

The woman driving the car and two men on the train — one of whom was thrown out of the train by the impact — suffered serious injuries. A further 10 people were lightly injured. The train was carrying about 50 people.

It wasn’t immediately clear why the car was on the tracks as the train approached.
