A passenger train has collided with a heavy duty truck at a railway crossing in southern Germany, killing two people and injuring several others, local media reported.

The train was carrying around 40 people when it rammed into the truck near the Bavarian city of Freihung on Thursday.

“It hurtled at 100 kilometres per hour, without braking, into the truck,” a spokesman for the police was quoted as saying by news website Focus Online.

The police spokesman said both the train and truck, which was carrying a US military vehicle, caught fire following the crash.

The 30-year-old truck driver was killed and another body was found in the train driver’s cab, police said. The truck’s passenger escaped with light injuries.

Of the sixteen passengers treated for injuries, four were taken to hospital in non-critical condition, police said.
