Chinese tourists get a bad rap for poor etiquette overseas. On July 11, photos posted on Sina Weibo by a tour guide showed two Chinese couples fighting over a “photo-bombing” incident at a lavender field in Provence, France. Noisy eating habits even caused a German hotel in Bavaria to designate 6:30 am to 7:30 am as breakfast time for Chinese tour groups so that other tourists could enjoy breakfast in peace at 8 am. What do foreigners in Beijing think of Chinese tourists in their home countries? Evelyn Cheng sought opinions at Yonganli’s Silk Market.

I think most Chinese tourists haven’t traveled much, so they don’t know much about other cultures. Things like spitting, jaywalking – it doesn’t bother people in China, but Westerners will be more affected. I perceive it as a cultural difference rather than rudeness.

Chinese are a lot pushier because personal space is a lot smaller in China. There is a lot more open space in the US than they’re accustomed to in China. They’re also more accustomed to bargaining. In the US, the price is the price!

They are loud. Maybe they could be a bit cleaner. They don’t dispose of garbage properly.
Josue Nevarez, student, Mexico
They are a bit noisy and always take photos. They’re good tourists, really organized and always traveling in groups.
Danzela Nevarez, student, Mexico
They are really shy and do not interact with locals very often. They’re always apologizing. It’s so cute to see them get really excited about something they see.
Nelson Dias, pilot, Portugal
We have a lot of Chinese tourists in Portugal. Chinese there are very quiet and don’t disturb others. They wait patiently and don’t take as much initiative as they do here.
Darcy Garrison, homemaker, US
I think it’s great that Chinese tourists get to come and see [other countries’] culture. They’re very open and curious. We were at Disneyland taking photos and, just like here, they came and sat with us to take photos. But they have to work on airplane etiquette. They try to get up to get their luggage while the plane is still landing.
Stuart Pearson, retiree, England
The amazing thing about Chinese tourists is that they get up so early. I think Chinese tourists are generally fine, as long as you close your hotel [room] door! They shout like there’s a party in the hall.
