The wall in front of me looks as if it could be in Game Of Thrones. Big blocks of rugged stone, pitted with time, are fused together on top of one another.
‘You like it?’ asks Elisabeth, my guide. ‘It was built in AD179 when the Romans came here and built a fort.’
But this isn’t Rome. It’s Regensburg, a Bavarian Disneyland of terracotta-tiled towers and Gothic churches, ornate palaces from whose windows rich merchants once peeked and cobble-stoned lanes.

It is becoming an unlikely destination for those interested in viewing the relics of ancient Rome.
This stretch of uncompromising wall can be found just off Dachauplatz, where a multi-media display tells the story.
Touch a screen and you will see a spear-and-shield-carrying legionnaire standing outside the walls two millennia ago.

After the wall, we head straight for the north gate of the fort, Porta Praetoria.
Along with the Porta Nigra in Trier, this is the oldest Roman structure north of the Alps.

In Neupfarrplatz, next to the 16th century church, we go underneath the square to see artefacts from the city’s history.
These include a bronze statue of Mercury, believed to have belonged to a high-ranking Roman official.
Thankfully, Regensburg doesn’t make a fuss of its Roman heritage: no lederhosen-wearing gladiators.
