Taste of Bavaria comes to Newhall

Hundreds of Santa Clarita Valley residents got a taste of Bavarian culture Saturday as they turned out to eat, drink and dance at the Old Town Newhall Oktoberfest.

Taste was the main attraction of the Main Street event, as attendees made sure to sample the available beers and wines or munch on hearty fare like wursts.

“Santa Clarita is the third-largest city in L.A. County right now, so we thought it was time to bring this event to town,” said Wendy Albright, who served on the committee for the event, which was sponsored by the Old Town Newhall Association.

Given how people turned out for the event, it seems many agreed with that sentiment. Albright said about 850 tickets were sold ahead of the event, with many more people showing up the day of.

“The turnout’s been excellent,” said Victor Feany, who donned a wig of yellow, braided pigtails for the event. “It’s been full since it opened.”

Along with food and drink, attendees also had a chance to check out a collection of vendors or dance along to live music.

“This was very good for a first Oktoberfest,” said Newhall resident Amanda Hickok, who dressed in lederhosen for Saturday’s event. “I’ve been to others but it’s nice to have one here.”

Part of the event’s goal was to showcase downtown Newhall for people who may be unfamiliar with the area, Albright said.

“It’s to bring people down into Old Town Newhall and show them how it’s changed,” Albright said. “We’re bringing in a lot of new businesses and a lot of those businesses don’t get to meet the clientele because most people don’t necessarily come into Old Town. So we’re trying to change that up a bit.”
