STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — More than 11,500 votes were cast in the “Best of Arts Entertainment” categories of the 2014 Staten Island Readers’ Choice Awards.

And your “Best Neighborhood Bar in the South Shore” winner is: Killmeyer’s Old Bavaria Inn — 4254 Arthur Kill Road, Charleston, 718-984-1202; Killmeyers.com — with 1,936 votes.

Killmeyer’s is said to be the oldest tavern on Staten Island. Its 19th-century carved mahogany bar has often been voted best in New York City. Since its award-winning restoration a decade ago, Killmeyer’s has been a South Shore family favorite.

Over the summer, enjoy dark German beer with wienerschnitzel while the German polka music plays in the beer garden. In these cold months, build up your winter layer with more of that.

One look at their beer selection tells you why bar-goers in the south keep going back to this place. The joint carries more than 50 German beers and countless other beers from New Zealand to Denmark.

1st runner up: Big Nose Kate’s — 2484 Arthur Kill Road, Great Kills; 718-227-3282 — with 988 votes.

Big Nose Kate’s is an old standby that some have called the “Coyote Ugly” of Staten Island. Here, there’s plenty of beer, all of which goes well with some reasonably priced chicken wings.

2nd runner up: Play Sports Bar — 2 Sneden Ave., Annadale; 718-984-3700 — with 874 votes.

Locals flock to Play Sports Bar to watch the game and enjoy one of more than 100 different types of beer, including many craft brews, occasionally alongside live music act or two.

3rd runner up: Tottenville Tavern — 7528 Amboy Road, Tottenville; 718-356-4500 — with 196 votes

Tottenville Tavern at the corner of Amboy Road and Main Street is a family-friendly bar and restaurant, conveniently at the end of the Staten Island Railway from St. George.
