Stark and stunning contrasts for sightseers

BAVARIA is scenically stunning. Yet this Alpine region of Germany is also an area of stark sightseeing contrasts, from fairytale castles to the infamous mountain-top hideaway of Adolf Hitler.

Our holiday kicks off, though, in Munich, pictured, where a tour of this famous city is included. Don’t miss the striking of the Town Hall’s world-famous carillon above Marienplatz, the incredible array of foodstuffs at nearby Viktualienmarkt, and beer and sausages at the Hofbrauhaus – a Bavarian “must-do”.

Then it’s off to the historic market town of Rosenheim for the next four nights.

On an optional excursion you can enjoy some of Europe’s finest Alpine scenery in the heart of southern Bavaria.

First stop will be at the infamous settlement of Obersalzburg, where the Nazi generals spent their holidays. From here, Hitler’s famous Eagle’s Nest or “tea-house” – now a restaurant – can be reached by a lift through the stunning mountains.

Salzburg is another excursion option. You’re free to explore the city under your own steam, from the Mozartplatz with its famous Glockenspiel clock, to the composer’s birthplace and his family home (Wohnhaus).

On the fifth day of your stay you can visit “Mad” King Ludwig’s castle at Neuschwanstein with its fairytale turrets and towers, and a Gothic interior which was inspired by a Wagner opera. You’ll also visit the famous village of Oberammergau, home every ten years to the world famous Passion Play, performed by a cast of hundreds of villagers.

An optional excursion also affords the opportunity to take the historic Gondola – the Laber Bergbahn – to the summit of the Laber, for some truly spectacular views and to enjoy coffee and cake at 5,000 feet.
