Southern Germany Severe Storms

Strong winds, hail, and a possible tornado caused damage to
homes and injuries in parts of southern Germany late UTC on
Wednesday May 13. The worst affected areas appear to be around
the cities of Augsburg, in the state of Bavaria, and Freiburg,
in Baden-Württemberg. Officials state that in the district
of Aichach-Friedberg, where Augsburg is situated, 178 buildings
were damaged by the storm, of which 33 are in danger of
collapsing and 12 are uninhabitable. In Freiburg, golf
ball-sized hail was reported on Wednesday night, causing some
damage to roofs and cars. Meanwhile, heavy rain in the early
hours of Friday has flooded some roads in the city, though the
extent of damage is unknown at this time. Two people were
seriously injured in Freiburg as a result of a lightning
strike, while seven more were hurt in Bavaria. Severe weather
warnings were lifted on Thursday morning, though heavy rain is
forecast to continue to affect southern Germany until late on
Saturday.
