Police have found the body of a missing teenager in a small town near the eastern German city of Dresden after she was kidnapped and held for ransom for 1.2 million euros (1.3 million dollars), a police spokesman said Tuesday.
Two men were subsequently arrested, a 61-year-old in the Saxon capital, Dresden, and a 39-year-old in the southern state of Bavaria. They have been charged with murder and kidnapping with extortion.
The 61-year-old made a partial confession and tipped off the police as to the whereabouts of the body, according to Chief Constable Dieter Kroll.
Police discovered the body in a yard Monday evening in the town of Lampersdorf. A final forensic report is pending.
It is thought that Anneli, the 17-year-old daughter of a local businessman, was killed on Friday, one day after she was violently forced into a car while walking her dog near her home in a village near Dresden.
The kidnappers then used the teenager’s phone to contact her father with a ransom demand.
Kroll said that Anneli had not been chosen at random. At least one of the kidnappers is said to have recognized her and used Facebook to gather information on the girl.
The motive was without doubt money, Public Prosecutor Erich Wenzlick said. The plot has been described by police as ill-conceived.
German police stepped up their efforts Monday to find Anneli with 1,200 police officers searching for the missing girl.
Police and the teenager’s parents publicly appealed to the kidnappers on Monday evening, unaware that attempts to find her alive were by this point futile, Kroll said.
DNA found on Anneli’s bike, which she had with her when she was kidnapped, matched that of the 39-year-old now in custody. He already has a criminal record for arson and insurance fraud, as well as an older sex offence charge.
