Plattlingers sing Selkirk’s praises in ‘strong’ twinning

Selkirk welcomed a 21-strong delegation from its twin town of Plattling in Bavaria from Wednesday to Sunday last week.

The new Town Council and their partners were first taken by organisers John Nichol and Rob Duff on tours of Selkirk, Abbotsford, Melrose Abbey and Eyemouth for fish and chips.

On Friday Selkirk’s Community Councillors hosted a cheese and wine reception in the Town Hall, where chairman Graham Easton said more of the Selkirk community was getting involved in the twinning, with seven major trips so far in 2015. Plattling’s Austrian twin town, Scharnitz, is also interested in visiting Selkirk, John Nichol said.

Plattling’s Deputy Mayor Roman Fischer told us: “For the twinning to stay strong and to have a solid future, it must be constantly moving forward and evolving. And so, it is important, that new people get involved – and most of all children, youngsters and the schools, because they are our future.

“It has been my very first visit, but it will certainly not be my last. With its already strong bonds and the growing number of visits, I consider the twinning a unique one, and I feel optimistic and positive about its future.” Astrid Hahne, on her 11th trip, added: “I have been involved in the twinning from the very first beginning, so it is fantastic to see how it grew, developed and strengthend over the years. Souters offer great hospitality and friendship.”
