On May 20, 1873, Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis received their patent for what is now called blue jeans. Originally called “waist overalls,” they were marketed as sturdy work trousers for miners during the California Gold Rush. Now they appear on runways and concert stages, albeit in slightly more fashionable form.
