One killed, 6 hurt in Ohio crash

A 75-year-old Defiance, Ohio, woman was killed Sunday in a two-car crash in Defiance County when she was ejected from the SUV she was riding in, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

Police say Paula Cooper was a passenger in a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban being driven by Johnny Burdine Jr., 49, of New Bavaria, Ohio, heading north on Harris Road, when the Suburban struck a 2004 Chevrolet Impala driven by Micayla Fitzsimmons, 22, of Defiance.

Police said Fitzsimmons was eastbound on Steinmaier Road and failed to yield at the stop sign at the intersection.

The force of the crash sent both vehicles off the northeast side of the intersection with the Impala coming to a rest on its top and the Suburban resting on its side. Cooper was pronounced dead at the scene by the Defiance County coroner.

Burdine and the other passengers in the Suburban, Harliey Miller, 18, and Johnny Burdine III, 12, and Jennifer Burdine, age unavailable, all of New Bavaria were transported to the Toledo Hospital.

Fitzsimmons and her 3-month-old passenger, Kailyn Ordway, were transported to Defiance Mercy Hospital.

Their conditions were not immediately available, police said.

No one in the Suburban was wearing a seat belt, the highway patrol said.

A seat belt and child safety seat were in use in the Impala, police said.

Assisting at the scene were the Defiance County Sheriff’s Office, Highland Township Fire Department and EMS, Richland Township Fire Department and EMS, Holgate EMS, Promedica Life-Flight, St. Vincent’s Life-Flight, the Defiance County Prosecutor’s office and the Defiance County Highway Department.
