STAUNTON – Where else other than Bavaria can you enjoy Oktoberfest on an actual 17th century German Farm?
The Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton, of course.
Join the annual Oktoberfest German heritage celebration this Saturday and Sunday at the Frontier Culture Museum. There will be traditional German food, dancing, German beer (of course), original music and plenty of fun and games for kids of all ages.
“The festival is particularly meaningful to the Frontier Culture Museum because it represents a significant component of German/Bavarian culture,” said Joe Merget, marketing director at the museum.
German food vendors at this year’s festival include The Bavarian Chef, Farm Fresh Fixin’s and Joe’s Sausages.
American food vendors include Rick’s BBQ of Waynesboro, Blue Ridge Pizza Co., Branch’s Soft-Serve Ice Cream, MJ’s Kickin Kettle Corn and DJ’s Homemade Sweets.
The original Oktoberfest was in Munich, Germany in 1810 and is now celebrated in many cities and towns around the world. It is a major element of Bavarian culture.
Germans were the largest group of non-English speaking Europeans to settle in colonial America. Between 1683 and 1776, roughly 120,000 German-speaking immigrants arrived in the colonies. Most came from the southwestern states of the Holy Roman Empire, particularly the Palatinate, Baden and Württemberg on the middle and upper Rhine River.
