Oktoberfest at NOMA Square in Greenville runs Oct. 1-4

THIS WEEK…A SPOT OF DOWNTOWN GREENVILLE WILL TURN INTO A SCENE FROM BAVARIA, GERMANY. AS OUR GUESTS TELL US…THIS IS ALL A WAY TO CELEBRATE OKTOBERFEST. LET’S WELCOME LAUREN JUSTUS AND HEATHER MEADORS. GUTEN MORGEN, LADIES! Guten Morgen, Myra! SO THE SECOND YEAR FOR NOMA SQUARE TO BRING BACK OKTOBERFEST. AND FOR THOSE WHO DON’T KNOW, IT STARTED OFF AS A ROYAL CELEBRATION IN GERMANY AND THEN TURNED INTO AN AGRICULTURAL FESTIVAL AND THEN REALLY PICKED UP IN EUROPE WITH THE REUNIFICATION OF GERMANY. BUT NOW, THESE DAYS IT’S SOMETHING WE ALL CELEBRATE. Exactly. HOW EXCITING IS IT TO BRING IT BACK TO GREENVILLE? It’s very exciting. We’re so excited for our second year. We have a lot of German businesses here in the Greenville community and surrounding areas so we hope they come out as well. LAST YEAR, A PRETTY BIG SUCCESS, RIGHT? It was. We had a longer festival. We shortened it this year. We started with six days, but we felt like we could have more entertainment if we shortened it to four days, so it’ll be just Wednesday through Saturday this year. And we felt like bringing in the Pallaner Biergarten is going to be a nice addition this year. A BAVARIAN BIERGARTEN IN DOWNTOWN GREENVILLE, RIGHT? FOR THOSE WHO DON’T KNOW, NOMA SQUARE IS RIGHT OUTSIDE THE HYATT REGENCY, RIGHT. SO IF THEY SEE PEOPLE WALKING AROUND IN DRINDLS OR LEDERHOSEN WHICH ARE THE MALE SUSPENDER-TYPE OUTFIT, RIGHT? DO NOT LOOK SURPRISED. THEY’RE THERE TO HELP YOU CELEBRATE. AND YOU HOPE TO DO SO AS WELL, RIGHT? Exactly. SO, YOU KNOW, TELL US WHAT KIND OF MUSIC ARE WE GOING TO BE HEARING…FOOD … ALL THAT HAPPENING? So, the music we’re really excited about. We have bands coming in throughout the southeast. And we have the Foothills Oompa band from Spartanburg. We have the Holtakandtyrolean band. They’re out of Jamestown, North Carolina. We also have the Chanelheimer Oompa band out of Augusta, so we’re really bringing in bands from all over the southeast. WAY TO POPULARIZE THE BRASS, RIGHT? Yeah. AND THE FOOD. WHAT KIND OF FOOD CAN PEOPLE EXPECT? Chef Brandon is going to do a great job this year. He’s making, of course, brats. We’re going to have a brats-eating contest. You have great German brats. He’s also going to have sauerbraten sliders. We’ll be having some Black Forest cupcakes. You gotta bring in a little German dessert and lots of other treats. SO CERTAINLY THE BREAD… Of course, pretzels too. I was gonna say, that’s a huge part of it as well, So we’ll have pretzels too. RIGHT, SO THE BREAD, BEER, BRATS. THAT’S SOMETHING WE ALL GIVE GERMANS CREDIT FOR. BUT THEY’VE ALSO BEEN INFLUENTIAL WHEN IT COMES TO STORIES AND FILM AND FASHION. SO LET’S TAKE A LITTLE QUIZ HERE. FIRST QUESTION. IS THIS PERSON — IS KARL LAGERFELD ASSOCIATED WITH FILM, FASHION OR FAIRYTALES? I’m going to go with fashion. VERY GOOD. HE’S A HAMBIRG-BORN FASHION DESIGNER WITH TIES TO THE CHLOE, FENDI AND CHANEL LABELS. I love Chanel! OKAY, F.W. MURNAU — FILM, FASHION OR FAIRYTALE? Let’s go with film on this one. VERY GOOD, LAUREN. IN FACT, HE WAS VERY INFLUENTIAL WITH SILENT FILMS — MOST NOTABLY NOSFERATU –THE VAMPIRE FILM THAT WHICH WAS MADE INTO MANY DIFFERENT VERSIONS. HERE’S THE FINAL TRIVIA QUESTION PHILLIP GROT JOHANN. Well, i’m guessing it’s fairytales. I don’t know which one. Very good. In fact, he’s an illustrator of an early publication of the Grimm Brothers Fairytales. SO CERTAINLY OUR TASTE OF GERMAN CULTURE THIS MORNING AND DEFINITELY FOUR DAYS WORTH OF GERMAN CULTURE AND COULD YOU PLEASE REMIND US WHEN THIS IS ALL TAKING PLACE? ABSOLUTELY. The festival kicks of Wednesday, october 1st and that’ll run through Saturday, October 4th. Wednesday, of course, we have our ceremonial keg tapping so make sure you’re there for that. And then Thursday,we’ll open for lunch actually at 11 am and we’ll run til 9 pm Thursday through Saturday. And it doesn’t stop there. Continues Friday. Friday of course, we’ll have the chanelheimer oompa band and they were a huge hit last year, so we’re really excited to have them back. Thursday night will be a special treat with our stein holding competition and our brat-eating competition. ZEHR GUT! SO NICE TO HAVE
