STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Get ready for a night of music, dancing and donating.
On Sunday, Killmeyer’s Old Bavaria Inn, Charleston, will host a blood drive concert to benefit the New York Blood Center.
Starting at 4 p.m., do-gooders can donate their time and blood to assist hospitals in the New York area. The event will run until 8 p.m.
There will also be live music from five local bands. Performers, who will take the stage at 6:30 p.m., are set to include Timepiece, Uplift Mofo Party Plan, Paraiso, Above the Boulevard and West of Dennis.
Katie Greibesland, a junior at Stony Brook University, is organizing the event through the Bloodstock Scholarship Program, which encourages college students to assemble community blood drives. Though she has donated before, this is the first blood drive Ms. Greibesland has organized.
“The blood center recommended holding a drive in a church or community center,” explained the New Dorp Beach resident. “I knew hosting the drive at a show would get people to go while getting my friends involved in something good.”
Donors must be between 17 and 75 years old, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and meet all conditions set by the blood center. Donors over 75 may donate if they meet all donor eligibility requirements and present a physician’s note.
Eltingville native Chris Taranto, a member of Uplift Mofo Party Plan, said he is ready to perform. “Music is a language; you can talk to anyone through it,” he said. “To be able to bring people in to donate is an empowering feeling.”
Admission is $2 for donors and $5 for non-donors.
