Murray battles to clay triumph

Andy Murray claimed his first career clay court title as he defeated Philipp Kohlschreiber in Monday’s Munich Open final.

After a rain affected week in Bavaria, the Scot started his clash against the home favourite on Sunday afternoon, only for the weather to once again intervene.

With Kohlschreiber leading 3-2 over night, the pair returned on Monday and played out an extremely tight encounter, with Murray eventually emerging as the 7-6 (7-4) 5-7 7-6 (7-4) victor.

The victory marks Murray’s first tournament win of the season, while also sees him break his duck on clay ahead of the French Open which begins later this month.

Next up for both players is the Madrid Masters where they have been drawn to meet in the second round and after the match, the Scot admitted the conditions made things extremely difficult for him.

“It was a really tough match, he served very close to the line and I was getting frustrated,” he said. “The rain made things really tough, but as a Scot I’m used to that.

“It’s been a hard couple of days, so I am very happy to have won, especially on clay.”
