Munich’s Allianz Arena first venue to be proposed for Euro 2020

The 2020 European Championship has been announced to be hosted in 13 different cities and 13 different countries, and the Bavarian state, the city of Munich and FC Bayern München have launched a bid to the DFB (German FA) to host Euro 2020 matches at the Allianz Arena.

At a press conference on Thursday, it was announced by Bavarian Minister President Horst Seehofer, Mayor of Munich Christian Ude, and Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge that the bid had been submitted.

The venue could be submitted for two possible categories: it either will host three group matches and one last-16 or quarter-final match, or both semi-finals and the final. The Allianz Arena was submitted for both options, although Rummenigge stated that the second scenario would be the “absolute highlight.”

“As we proved with the staging of the 2012 Champions League final, we’re capable of welcoming the footballing world as likeable and good hosts,” Rummenigge said.

“In countless instances, Bavaria has proved she is a very tolerant host, and that’s our strongest trump,” Seehofer also announced.

Only one city in Germany will ultimately be selected for the honour. the other German cities in contention might be Berlin, Dortmund and Stuttgart, but none of them have submitted bids.

“I’m thoroughly optimistic that Munich could be endorsed by the DFB,” Rummenigge continued. “So we must approach the matter with a touch of humility. We’re not arrogant, and we’re not saying it’s done and dusted. Instead, we’ll work intensively and closely on this bid.”

“Our arena meets the highest standards. We’re very proud of our stadium.”

Seehofer also revealed his belief that Munich, Bavaria will make a very good host with “a lot to offer,” in terms of “the mentality of our people, and our cosmopolitan attitude.”

“Bavarians are very, very good hosts,” Seehofer concluded.

The Allianz Arena was a venue for the 2006 World Cup and the 2012 Champions League final. It is currently the shared home ground of Bayern Munich and 1860 Munich, with a capacity of 71,137 for league matches and 67,812 for international matches.

The host cities will be revealed in September 2014.
