Munich Lockdown: Train Stations Cleared After Imminent Terror Threat Reports

Trains stations have reopened and police presence across the city has been reduced after police say there is no imminent terror threat.

“We still have many colleagues deployed”.

High threat “Security forces anticipate that the high threat of global terrorism will persist”, he said.

The “concrete tip” indicated a group of up to seven Islamic State militants was planning a massacre involving suicide bombers targeting train stations in the Bavarian capital. He did not name the country but German television said in an unsourced report that the tip-off came from France.

The interior minister of Bavaria told reporters that the government had received leads pointing to a group of five to seven potential IS sympathizers plotting several coordinated suicide attacks in the Bavarian capital.

He said authorities are investigating intensively, but so far had not made any arrests.

The US Justice Department said on Thursday that a 25-year-old man accused of planning to attack a restaurant in upstate NY on New Year’s Eve had been arrested and charged with attempting to provide material support to Islamic State. That tip, too, had included the names of several suspects.

Munich police issued a statement saying that an attack was expected in the city during the night, and warned people to avoid the two stations and large crowds in general.

Munich’s main station and the surrounding area were evacuated just 90 minutes before the city was to ring in the New Year. “Indeed we did get indications (for a planned attack) yesterday, which were evaluated by the Bavarian intelligence authorities and federal police”.

European capitals are on high security alert, with Brussels and Paris both scrapping fireworks for New Year’s celebrations. About 550 police officers had been on patrol across the city overnight, some of whom were heavily armed and had been recruited from neighboring police departments, as people celebrated New Year’s Eve.

The whole of Europe has entered the New Year under heightened alert, 7-weeks after Islamist militants killed 130 people in Paris.
