Continental – Lucille A. Johnston, 94, of Continental died 2:33 p.m., Wednesday, December 24, 2014 at Van Crest Nursing Home, Holgate. She was born March 7, 1920 in New Bavaria to the late Philip and Agnes (Limpach) Gilgenbach. On July 11, 1944, she married Hilton “Doc” Johnston who died September 25, 1985.
She is survived by 4 children: Phil Johnston of Defiance, Greg (Geri) Johnston of Ottawa, Tim Johnston of Continental, and Nancy Bennett of Elmore; 9 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by 2 daughters: Virginia “Jinny” Okuley and Barbara Johnston; a daughter-in-law: Rita Johnston; a son-in-law: Jeff Bennett; 5 brothers: Chester, Clarence, Milfred, Wilfred, Robert, Gerald Gilgenbach; and 3 sisters: Cecelia Lafountain-Verhoff, Geraldine Steingass, and Kathleen Aden-Schwader.
Lucille worked at Campbell Soups in Napoleon for 15 years. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Bavaria and was the president of their Rosary Altar Society for 50 years. She was both a charter and lifetime member of New Bavaria’s VFW Auxiliary.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 29, 2014 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, New Bavaria with Fr. Nick Cunningham officiating. Burial will follow in Monroe Cemetery, Continental. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday and from 2 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at HEITMEYER FUNERAL HOME, Continental where there will be a rosary at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday. Memorials may be made to VanCrest Nursing Home, Holgate or to the New Bavaria VFW.
