Karl-Heinz Rummenigge: Alonso to Liverpool Rumours ‘Wrong’

Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has dismissed speculation linking Xabi Alonso with a return to Liverpool.

Alonso is in the final year of his contract at the Allianz Arena and although a renewal has not yet been formalised, Rummenigge is confident the Spanish midfielder will extend his stay in Bavaria.

”Recently, I had a talk with Xabi. He feels very good at Bayern Munich and in the city of Munich too,” the 60-year-old told Sport Bild.

“He signalled to me he is interested in staying in Munich. Rumours he would plan to leave are wrong.”

Alonso remains a popular figure on Merseyside, where he spent five seasons and won both the FA Cup and Champions League.

While the 34-year-old admits no decision has been made regarding his future, the early signs suggest he’ll remain with the Bundesliga champions.

“I have not made a decision yet, neither for Bayern nor against,” Alonso added. “Even concerning the end of my career I have not set a limit.

“I am pleased about the positive signals. I am happy to be at the club.

“I can feel the respect, this is important. Now we will see what happens.”

The former Real Madrid man, who won his second Champions League in his final season at the Bernabeu, has previously been linked with a return to his homeland with first club Real Sociedad.
