The lakes of Bavaria, water-ed by the melting snow of the Alps, are an oasis of tranquillity, offering some of the most breathtaking views.
Lake Koenigsee

Located in the deep, lush valleys of the Obersalzburg range in Berchtesgaden, this lake’s stillness reflects the most gorgeous of panoramas. The ancient onion dome-shaped church of St. Bartholoma sits right in the central part of this magical water body, capped by a snowy promontory, and in winter, it freezes to almost 30 degrees Fahrenheit! The stillness and peace can be celebrated with a frothy mega stein of Bavarian Dunkel Weisse beer (dark wheat beer). Visitors at Konigsee’s hamlet pier shop for rare precious lake stones and traditional Bavarian costumes.
Lake Ammersee

A luxury cruise on this massive lake takes a trip around the small fishing holiday villages on its banks and small grass-tufted islands to which families repair when they want some quiet time. One of the favourite indulgences of Muencheners or the people of Munich, a 40-minute drive away, and locals, is to sit in one of the many cafes here for a hot Bavarian snack with the finest Bavarian beer.
Lake Chiemsee

Bavaria’s largest lake is breezy and very cold. An enchanting island in it is home to the royal summer retreat palace of the former Bavarian King, built in the Palais de Ver-sailles style of French architectural opulence. There are wonderful views to be had from here of the Alps even as one takes in up close a mélange of luxury sailboats, yachts and speedboats out on the lake.
Lake Staernberg

This panoramic neighbourhood lake of Munich, the capital of Bavaria, is only 30 minutes away from it. Its banks are dotted with the super luxury villas of Munich’s billionaires.
Lake Staffelsee
This one’s like something out of a fairytale. A lively beer garden is a favourite spot for fresh lake fish and for some light and cheerful conversation. We relished Germany’s most memorable winter drink, hot Gluwein (mulled wine), which has fresh-cut fruits, cloves, cinnamon and sultanas soaked in it.
Lake Tegernsee

This dream lake is a perennially misty, romantic canvas. Mountain trekkers, nature walkers, water sport enthusiasts and ornithologists flock here. Take a leisurely stroll along the many piers here and then have a hearty lunch at the century-old ‘Hofbrauhaus’, well known for its piping hot cheese-based ‘Obatza’, pretzels and hot chocolate.
