Half of Bavarian asparagus harvest lost

According to the first cautious estimates of the German ministry of Agriculture the damage caused by heavy rain and high water amounts to 173 million Euro, as announced on the German website Fruchthandel.de.

Federal State Bavaria was hit the hardest. Here the damage amounts to between 75 and 80 million Euro. The asparagus, strawberry and maize cultivation suffered the most damage. In 2012 a record crop of 12,247 tons of asparagus was harvested in Bavaria from 2,088 HA. The asparagus cultivation of the present season has hardly been damaged by the floods, but rather more by almost two weeks of continuing wet and cold weather. Also by soil damage as a result of heavy rains for days and the rise in ground water. Up to now about half of the normal harvest yield has been lost.
