Gustin Series welcomes famed pianist

World-renowned pianist Janina Fialkowska performs Wednesday in the Lyell Gustin Recital Series.

As it happens, she remembers Gustin, the beloved Saskatoon piano teacher, adjudicating her in a music festival when she was young. Fialkowska was born in Montreal and now lives in Bavaria, Germany.

From her bio: “Celebrated for her interpretations of the classical and romantic repertoire, she is particularly distinguished as one of the great interpreters of the piano works of Chopin and Mozart. She has also won acclaim as a champion of the music of Franz Liszt as well as of 20th-century Polish composers, both in concert and on disc.”

Her recent performances have included shows in London with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra; Wigmore Hall and New York City, Houston, Montreal, Toronto, Berlin, Bremen and Dusseldorf. Coming up is a performance of the Ravel piano concerto with the Vancouver symphony.

Noteworthy praise: “Indeed, lesser mortals may well weep with envy at such unfaltering authority. She has done her one-time mentor, Arthur Rubinstein, proud.” – Bryce Morrison, Gramophone.

“The most beautiful Liszt CD of the decade.” – Frankfurter Allgemeine

On the Gustin Recital program: Selections from the Lyric Pieces by Grieg, Schumann’s Faschingsschwank aus Wien (Carnival Jest from Vienna), Jeux d’eau by Ravel and a group of works by Chopin: Polonaise Fantaisie in A flat, Mazurkas and the Ballade in F Minor, Op. 52, No. 4. Concert time on Wednesday is 7:30 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. A pre-concert chat at 6:45 p.m. will be given by pianist Dr. Christine Vanderkooy of the University of Regina.
