Gunman halts Merkel rally

A GUNMAN who took three people hostage at a German city hall, forcing Chancellor Angela Merkel to cancel a planned election rally there, has been captured and his captives rescued unharmed.

The hostages included a deputy mayor of the Bavarian city of Ingolstad.

The incident began several hours before Mrs Merkel was due in the city for a rally that was to take place on the square in front of the city hall.

Germany holds national elections on September 22, and Bavaria votes in a state election a week earlier.

 

100 RESCUED IN BOAT DISASTER

More than 100 suspected asylum-seekers have been pulled to safety by rescuers after their boat sank in the Indian Ocean.

The vessel went down 220km north of Christmas Island, where Australia operates a detention camp for asylum-seekers.

An Australian navy ship rushed to the scene after the Australian Maritime Safety Authority received a call for help from someone on board.

Rescuers plucked 106 people to safety, the Customs and Border Protection agency said in a statement. Two people had minor injuries.

 

US MAN ADMITS CANNIBALISM

A US man who said he killed a man and ate his heart and parts of his brain has pleaded guilty but not criminally responsible to murder.

Alex Kinyua entered the plea yesterday to first-degree murder in the 2012 death of a 37-year-old man from Ghana who was staying with Kinyua’s family.

Kinyua (22) admitted carving up Kujoe Bonsafo Agyei-Kodie before eating his organs, the Harford, Maryland, Sheriff’s Office has said.

 

IRON BEADS FROM OUTER SPACE

Iron beads used to make a 5,000-year-old Egyptian necklace originated in outer space, a study has shown.

Scientists discovered that the beads were hammered from meteorite metal rather than iron ore.

The nine beads had once been strung into a necklace with gold and gemstones.

They were found in 1911 in a cemetery near the village of el-Gerzeh in lower Egypt.
