A German teenager swimming in Bavaria came upon a solid gold bar at the bottom of a lake and may get to keep it, local police said on Wednesday.
The 16-year-old found the precious metal about six-and-a-half feet under the surface of the Koenigssee lake, located in the German Alps near the Austrian border, The Associated Press reports.
The girl handed her discovery over to authorities.
The 500g bar, which she found at a depth of two metres, is worth an estimated €16,000.
Divers on Tues. carried out a basic search of the world around where the bar was found, still did not find any more gold or different valuables.
Legend has it that, during the Nazi era, soldiers dumped many such gold bars and other treasures in Germany’s Königssee lake, supposedly for sake keeping.
A picture released by officers shows the bar, which is 6cm long, has several markings including references to its weight and fineness.
