Germany snags possible suspect in Paris attacks

A man arrested in Germany’s southern state of Bavaria in early November after weapons and explosives have been present in his automotive could also be linked to Friday’s lethal assault in Paris, Bavaria’s state premier stated on Saturday.

Responding to questions about the Paris attacks, Bavarian governor Horst Seehofer said: “In the course of spot checks we had an arrest where there are reasonable grounds to assume that there may be a link to the matter”.

Documents uncovered during the arrest indicate that the 51-year-old man from Montenegro was en route to Paris, according to a report on Bayerische Rundfunk.

The German police had alerted French authorities immediately, Bayerische Rundfunk said.

“Whether that means there is a connection (to the attacks) or not is being investigated”, de Maiziere said after an emergency meeting of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s security cabinet in Berlin.

Conservative leaders in Germany insisted on linking the terror attacks in Paris on Friday night to the country’s own refugee crisis, with calls emerging on Saturday for a crackdown at German borders.

Police or authorities have not confirmed that the man is a suspect in the attacks or that he is in any way linked to the assailants.

“It seems it was found that he originally wanted to go to Paris, heavily armed with several different firearms and explosives”, Wendt told German news station n-tv.

“We checked this information and found that 51-year old V.V. from Podgorica is not known to the police as the perpetrator of serious crimes or violations of public order,”Montenegro police spokeswoman Tamara Popovic said in a statement”.
