Germany: Floods Cause State of Emergency, Evacuations

03 de junio de 2013, 10:25Berlin, Jun 3 (Prensa Latina) The situation is still tense in flooded eastern and southern areas of Germany after it rained Sunday night and Monday early morning.

Over the last few days some cities have declared a state of emergency and have begun evacuating inhabitants due to the increase of the river level.

The most critical situations are occurring in the federal states of Bavaria, Saxony, and Thuringia.

In Bavaria, the most dangerous situation took place along the rivers Danube and Inn.

“We are expecting a 12,55 meter level for the Danube by noon,” noted the spokesperson of the General Staff of emergency in Bavaria’s Passau city.

Currently, the central area of Passau is flooded and authorities have disconnected electricity in some areas of the city.

Meanwhile, some cities in Thuringia began evacuating the population.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel promised the affected communities the support of the federal government.

The federal army is preparing support missions in the states of Bavaria, Saxony, and Thuringia.
