Germany: Bavarian asparagus gets geogrpahical status

Asparagus from the Bavaria region in Germany has received a protected designation of origin (PDO) as ‘Abensberger Spargel’, ensuring its status within Europe.

The news was announced by Helmut Brunner, the Bavarian minister of agriculture. To achieve this goal of geographical indication has taken 5 years.

Only asparagus from the ‘Sandgürtel’ region between Siegenburg, Neustadt, Abensberg and Langquaid will be allowed to carry the designation.

“Thanks to the designation our Bavarian produce and its traditional quality will be safeguarded and recognised,” the minister said.
