The cold weather registered until the beginning of April has significantly delayed the asparagus growth consequently delaying the arrival of the Spring vegetables on the market of two weeks.
Helmut Brunner, Bavaria’s Ministry of agriculure, foresees an abundant growth to be registered in the next few days thanks to the rise of temperatures. As reported by the Ministry, the lovers of Bavaria’s asparagus are increasingly choosing to buy asparagus coming from their own region. Last year, the self-supply rate has grown again, going from 80% to 83%.
The demand for asparagus is copious in Bavaria and to satisfy it the almost 750 producers of Bavarian asparagus have doubled their cropped land to 2.750 hectares between 2000 and today. For this reason, this vegetable represents the main cultivation of the federated State. Last year, Bavarian producers obtained the record-breaking harvest of 14.250 tons. The average annual yield reached 6.4 tons/hectare.
On asparagus crops covered with cloth located in Lower Saxony, the yelds are high. According to Dieter Weber, consultant expert in asparagus cultivation from the Agricultural Council of Lower Saxony, there are currently some local farms that harvest between 200 and 250 kilos of asparagus/hectare per day.
The asparagus season will end on 24th June.
