MUNICH – German prosecutors say they have searched tax offices in Bavaria as they investigate who leaked a document on Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness’ tax affairs to the media.

Hoeness will go on trial in March on tax evasion charges, which prosecutors filed last year months after the Bayern president reported himself to authorities over a previously undeclared Swiss bank account.

Munich prosecutors opened a separate investigation into a suspected breach of tax confidentiality after Hoeness filed a criminal complaint. They say that media in October confronted Hoeness with an extract from his tax file that is supposed to be accessible only to employees of the regional financial administration.

Thursday’s searches were meant to determine who had access to Hoeness’ tax file and how media got hold of the document.
