German conservatives welcome Ukraine’s efforts to settle Donbas conflict via Constitutional reform

The Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) and the Christian Social Union in Bavaria (CSU) factions in the German Parliament, the Bundestag, have welcomed the openness of Ukraine’s Constitutional reform.

With the Constitutional reform, a key element of which is the country’s decentralization, Ukraine implements the central provisions of the Minsk agreements. The CDU and the CSU factions of the Bundestag welcome the attempts of Ukraine’s leaders to make a significant contribution to the settlement of the conflict in eastern Ukraine, CDU MP Franz Josef Jung said on Wednesday. In addition, the CDU-CSU praised the openness of the Constitutional reform, in particular regarding the occupied territories in eastern Ukraine. At the same time, it’s important to understand that responsibility for foreign and defense policy, as well as national security and the development of the legal system, will remain with the president, government and Ukrainian parliament, Jung said.
