Dundee Rotary Oktoberfest boasts beer, beats and a taste of Bavaria

Lederhosen are optional at Dundee Rotary Club’s fifth annual charity Oktoberfest which continues this evening.

The German-themed beer festival’s main event took place last night and the drink will continue to flow at Discovery Quay tonight from 6pm.

Live music and authentic German food are being served up alongside an assortment of different ales, ciders and beers.

The Rotary’s main fundraiser for the year sees people returning every year, according to Robert Dunn, chairman of the Rotary club’s Oktoberfest committee.

He said: “Oktoberfest has worked well for us. We heard about it in Germany and wanted to bring some of that to Dundee.

“This is the fifth year we have run the event and year on year we are trying to improve the experience.

“We have a great selection of bands as well as beer, wine and prosecco, and the food on offer is always a good complement.

“So far it has gone exceedingly well. I think about 80% of people come back, and some of them this year have come back for the fifth time.”

The festival was kicked off with a corporate event on Thursday where 28 local companies had tables.

Tonight’s music will feature Window, Tarpaulin, Gleadhraich, Copper Lungs, Judge Hardie and the Crimes and The Full Tin Tin.

While there will be entry on the door, due to the success of last year’s event organisers are advising people to book a ticket beforehand.

All proceeds from the event will go towards supporting local good causes through the Rotary charity.

A spokesman for the Rotary club added: “The Rotary club take none of the money raised for ourselves and we strive to keep our expenses to an absolute minimum.

“All being well we expect to raise more than £20,000 again this year.”

Tickets priced at £10 include the first drink and are available at www.dundeerotaryoktoberfest.co.uk.
