‘Das Boot’ Remake Planned

Call it Das re-Boot.

Bavaria Studios, the German production company behind Wolfgang Petersen‘s anti-war film Das Boot are planning a remake of the 1981 Oscar-nominated classic.

Bavaria boss Christian Franckenstein told German trade magazine Blickpunkt Film that Das Boot is one of several properties from its rights library the company is looking to relaunch.

Based on the novel by Lothar-Gunther Buchheim, who was a war reporter stationed on an U-Boat during WWII, Das Boot is one of the most successful German films of all time. The film was nominated for six Oscars and launched Petersen’s Hollywood career.

The claustrophobic submarine drama starred Jürgen Prochnow, Herbert Grönemeyer and Klaus Wennemann. In Germany, Das Boot was also shot as a six-part mini-series for television.

In addition to Das Boot, Franckenstein said Bavaria was looking to relaunch Raumschiff Orion, a black-and-white, low-tech sci-fi series from 1965 that enjoys cult status in Germany.
