Czech-Bavarian exhibition to focus on Charles IV next year

Herman and Spaenle signed a memorandum of Czech-Bavarian cooperation in culture.

The exhibition has been organised by the National Gallery in Prague together with the Nuremberg-based House of Bavarian History and German National Museum.

The Czech cabinet will discuss the project, including its financing and the appointment of a Czech commissioner responsible for it, at its meeting on Wednesday.

The exhibition, which has been prepared for three years now, will focus on Charles IV (1316-1378) and his period, but it is also to highlight the developments in Bohemia and Bavaria since Charles IV´s era until the present time.

It will be complemented by new books and a rich accompanying programme including smaller exhibitions and projects in Czech regions.

“The exhibition will present the Czech Crown Lands as an important part of European politics and culture of the 14th century and point out close ties between the areas of today´s Czech Republic and the Free State of Bavaria,” said Herman.

Spaenle said Charles IV, who succeeded Louis IV the Bavarian on the imperial throne, is an extraordinary link between the two neighbouring countries.

Charles IV, the Prague-born son of Czech King John of Luxembourg and Eliska, from the Bohemian Premyslide dynasty, represents the Luxembourg royal family, while his predecessor on the imperial throne was a Wittelsbach.

Herman and Spaenle said the new memorandum provides for cooperation between all areas of culture including museums, heritage conservationists, galleries, libraries, music, theatre and cinematography.

It is also to boost the exchange of experts.
