Once upon a time, the Bavarian crown prince married a beautiful princess. The festivities of their marriage were held on the fields in front of the city gates with food, alcohol and fun. Horse races, organised in the presence of the royal family, gradually became a tradition that was followed for years to come. The celebration was christened as Oktoberfest.

A season to eat, drink and be merry, Oktoberfest is traditionally a 16-day festival running from late September to the first weekend of October, with more than six million people from around the world attending events held in Bavaria and Germany. So can Pune be far behind? The tradition embraced worldwide is celebrated with aplomb in the city as well, with beer being the centre of a legacy of great food.

For the fifth year running, the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce is bringing the melting pot of German and Bavarian culture to Pune. They will organise the Pune Oktoberfest 2013 between October 11 and 13 at Pune Race Course, during the Derby Weekend. German band, Die Sulmtaler, will also be performing at the event.

Many restaurants in the city are also focussing on German and Bavarian delicacies. Chef Rohan Sowani of Courtyard by Marriot, Pune City Centre, says he has designed the menu around “beer and bangers”. “We are serving an assortment of sausages, including curly, smoked and cheese sausages,” he says. There’s also a variety of Nurnberger sausages and cocktail sausages, served along with traditional Sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, pickled vegetables and roast gravy. The celebrations will take place at Eviva Sky Lounge, Courtyard by Marriot, Pune City Centre, till October 6.

Pune’s oldest microbrewery, 1st Brewhouse (Doolally on Tap!) at Corinthians Resort and Club, is offering “a taste of Germany” with weekend barbecues of German weisswurst sausages (traditional pork sausages made from bacon, spices and condiments), Schnitzel (crumb-fried chicken escalopes, served with cocktail sauce), Brathendl (barbeque chicken wings), mushroom roesti (mushroom ragout on top of fried potato cake) and a range of sizzlers. Umesh Gupta, Executive Chef, says the festivities are on till October 31, except on October 8. With a special Bavarian menu, Flambos Brewpub is celebrating Oktoberfest till October 31 at both its outlets in Camp as well as the Flambos Tavern at VITS-Orchid Hotel, Balewadi. On the platter are Weiss Wurst and traditional Honey mustard, Bratwurst, frankfurters, Schnitzel and spare ribs, among others.
