MILWAUKEE (WKOW) –A food fight on Capitol Hill could impact Wisconsin.
As part of a trade deal with the U.S., the European Union wants to add a requirement that foods made in a specific geographic region be named for that place.
Bavarian beer could only be brewed in Bavaria, not Milwaukee.
That could require many Wisconsin beers, brats and cheeses to be renamed.
“We have to fight back against this. This would have a huge impact on our export market, on these industries that are so vital to Wisconsin’s economy,” said Sen. Tammy Baldwin.Wisconsin’s U.S. Senators Baldwin and Ron Johnson have both signed a letter to the USDA, urging it to continue its pushback against the European Union’s efforts.
