Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola says Philipp Lahm is likely to spend more time at right-back this season.
The skipper has played the majority of his career in defence but was moved into a midfield role upon Guardiola’s arrival in Bavaria two years ago.
However, with only one other recognised right-back at the club in the form of Brazilian Rafinha, Lahm could be forced to return to his old position, especially with so much competition in the middle of the park.
The boss insists there will always be a place for his captain in the side but admits that the extra competition in midfield means that he may often find himself switching roles.
“We only have one right-back, Rafinha,” Guardiola said. “(Lahm) will play in midfield one day, but also compete with Rafinha the other.
“I have said it many times that Lahm is our most important player. He is one of the most intelligent players I have ever coached.
“I am delighted to see him play in midfield. He reads the game well. But he has a lot of competition in midfield.”
