Following last weekend’s debut, the BMW
X5 xDrive40e is now starring in its first promotional clip.
The 2013 BMW X5 eDrive concept has now evolved into a
production model which will be commercialized with the “xDrive40e” moniker.
Even though it weighs a hefty 2,230 kg (4,916 lbs), the plug-in hybrid SAV from
Bavaria still manages to consume just 3.4 – 3.3 liters / 100 km (83.1 – 85.6
mpg UK or 69.1 – 71.2 mpg US) and will emit only 78 – 77 g/km. This is all
possible by mixing up a conventional 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged gasoline
engine with an electric motor, an eight-speed Steptronic transmission and a 9
kWh lithium-ion battery.
The combustion engine is rated at 245 HP (180 kW) and 300 Nm
(258 lb-ft) whereas the electric motor delivers an extra 113 HP (83 kW) 250 Nm
(184 lb-ft). With a combined output of 313 HP (230 kW) and 450 Nm (332 lb-ft),
the BMW X5 xDrive40e will run the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in a more than
decent 6.8 seconds and will top out at an electronically-capped 130 mph (210
km/h).
It can even be driven on electric power, but it will run out
of battery juice in approximately 19 miles (31 km). Once the battery is
depleted, a full recharge from a regular socket will take 3 hours and 50
minutes while the optional BMW i Wallbox cuts charging time to 2 hours and 45
minutes.
