Oktoberfest fun comes to Marion

The happy celebration of Oktoberfest will add an oom-pah flourish to Marion Saturday. Oktoberfest originated with a royal wedding in Bavaria in 1810, and traditionally runs in Germany from late September until the first Sunday in October. In addition to German food specialties like bratwurst, knackwurst, sauerkraut and potato pancakes, there will be entertainment all day. Alpenblumen Musikanten will be onstage from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and the Alpenblumen Dancers follow from 2 to 6 p.m. The Bavarian Brothers Band will cap things off, playing from 6 to 10 p.m.

11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, 465 Mill St., Marion. Admission, parking and entertainment costs $10. Children under 12 admitted free. Food and beverages will be on sale, with food being served continuously from noon to 8 p.m. For advance tickets, call (508) 758-2435.

Calling all Beatles fans to ORCTV studios

Local Beatles historian and collector Jim Cushman, along with Old Rochester Community Television, invites the public to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ first appearance in New England by enjoying a memorabilia show that will benefit a local food pantry. The Fab Four gave a legendary performance at the old Boston Garden on Sept. 12, 1964. Come see rare Beatles collectables including Beatles’-worn clothing, band autographs and other rare memorabilia. There will also be showings of rare Beatles film footage. Bring your camera!

Noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at the ORCTV studios, 345 Front St., Marion. Admission is one nonperishable food item per person, to be donated to a local food pantry for the upcoming holiday season. For more information, call ORCTV at (508) 748-1600.

Get some insight into local agriculture

An Antique Tractor Show and Community Day will take place Smith Neck Friends Meeting Saturday. Farmers from the Dartmouth area want to boost the understanding of agriculture among young adults, to increase appreciation of local produce, to promote the Meeting House as a gathering place, and to give thanks for the land and its produce. Russ Cornell will be bringing antique farm equipment, and Peter Ashley will bring his Minneapolis Moline tractor and give hay rides. The exhibits include small engine and equipment demonstrations, farm animals, cards, gifts and treasures. Further interesting exhibits include antique gardening tools, quilts by the Paskamansett Quilters, and a demonstration of the importance of bees with beekeeper Joe Tardiff. Added attractions are tractor games, corn husking and a portable sawmill, and a visit by the Howland family’s alpacas.

10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, 594 Smith Neck Road, at the corner of Rock O’Dundee, South Dartmouth. Lunch includes pre-ordered lobster rolls for $10. Singer-songwriter slated at church

The third of four offerings in the Nyman concert series at the Church of the Good Shepherd will feature guitarist-composer Hiroya Tsukamoto. He was born in Japan and was a scholarship student at Berklee College of Music. Tsukamoto has earned numerous awards for his songwriting, and his performances have been hailed as “taking us on an innovative, impressionistic journey filled with earthy, organic sounds that inpart a mood of peace and tranquility.” Tsukamoto recently toured Japan, and his itinerary included four live performances for Japan national television. Light refreshments will follow.

Group show begins the season at gallery

The Cherry Web Gallery begins its fall season with “Along the Way,” featuring the works of regional artists Lori Bradley, Joseph Caruso, Alison Horvitz, Marjorie Kaye, Judith Klein, Mark Millstein, Sheila Oliveira, George Shaw and Susan Strauss. On exhibit will be a range of works, including paintings, sculptures, photography and handmade kites. Singer-songwriter Michael Troy will perform at the opening reception, and light refreshments will be served. the exhibition continues through Oct. 17.

Two kids’ authors appearing at Partners

Saturday will see two local artists sharing their new books with shoppers at Partners Village Store. Alyn Carlson showcases her whimsical creations in “The Paper Hat Book: Super Hats for Super Kids.” Carlson shows how to fashion hats in a variety of themes, from “Floral Flapper” to “Viking Warrior” from readily accessible papers — even junk mail. South Dartmouth artist and teacher Sandra Hall will share her charming book, “Home is the Starting Place,” about a family of barn swallows that successfully copes with change.

Dog trainer offers bite-prevention talk

Local author and dog trainer Eric Letendre is offering a free back-to-school dogbite prevention seminar at the Humane Society Shelter SouthCoast. The reasons why dogs bite include lack of socialization, poor breeding, and most important, little or no training, Letendre says. The workshop will show dog owners how to establish leadership, solve common behavior problems, and cover some basic obedience training. Attendees will also learn what to do when confronted by a strange dog. Letendre is the author of four dog training books and is popular on YouTube, with more than 11 million views of his videos.
