Belgrade (dpa) – The number of asylum seekers from Kosovo has
significantly dropped but it is still too high, Bavarian European
Affairs Minister Beate Merk said Thursday in Belgrade.

“There is no all-clear yet,” she said after meeting Serbian
officials. Migrants escaping from poverty “hamper our capacities for
refugees from civil wars, which are urgently needed.”

Itself a scene of war in 1999, Kosovo received assistance from
Germany to revive its moribund economy and improve the population‘s
prospects.

She said Kosovo, which declared independence from Serbia in 2008,
should also be declared a safe country, which would disqualify its
citizens from seeking asylum.

The number of asylum seekers from Kosovo arriving in Germany has
fallen after a spike in numbers earlier in the year, Germany‘s
Federal Office for Migration and Refugees said a day earlier.

The number of Kosovars arriving in Germany had dropped from 1,400 per
day at the start of February to fewer than 200 per day now.

Though the vast majority admit to running from poverty, not
persecution, many seek asylum when stopped by police in
Germany, despite their chance of receiving it being close to zero,
only to stave off their return home.
