Citizens in Munich and other parts of the southern German state of Bavaria oppose to launch a bid for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, the preliminary final polling results show on Sunday night.

The polling stations were open from 8 am (0700GMT) to 6 pm (1700GMT), and around 1.3 million voters in Munich, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, in the districts of Berchtesgadener Land and Traunstein were called on to vote.

A majority of people from all four regions vote against the bid, with 52.1 percent in Munich, 51.6 percent in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, 54 percent in the districts of Berchtesgadener Land and 59.7 percent in Traunstein, according to the official results.

The Bavarian politician has announced beforehand that there will be a bid only when the people in all participating municipalities agree. If a majority in any of the four regions opposes the plan, the bid will not go ahead.

Munich, which staged the 1972 Summer Olympic Games, was beaten by South Korea’s Pyeongchang to host the 2018 Winter Olympics two years ago.

The International Olympic Committee will decide in July 2015 over the host of the Winter Olympics 2022. Beijing and the northern Chinese city of Zhangjiakou have already launched a joint bid.
