Overton Square in Midtown Memphis is about to get its first taste of Bavaria.

Schweinehaus, a Bavarian-style restaurant with the tagline “A celebration of pork and bier,” has leased 3,790 square feet in Overton Square at 2110 Madison Ave., the former home of restaurant Paulette’s.

When the lunch, dinner and take-out restaurant opens in late summer, patrons will be served by wait staff in Germanic dress at handmade wooden tables in a classic Oktoberfest-style beer hall, a release today said. Landlord Loeb Properties Inc. has also added a patio, which will be used as a “beer garden.”

The restaurant concept comes from Chef David Scott Walker, who received his training from the French Culinary Institute. Walker has moved back to Memphis to be near family after working at several nationally recognized restaurants, including Anthony Bourdain’s French Bistro, and opening his own Manhattan gastropub.

The menu will include “as many ingredients as possible” from the Memphis area and a beer selection that includes traditional Bavarian beers as well as locally made brews.

“The focus will be to bring guests together through sharing tables, telling tall tales over a liter of lager and enjoying a grilled wurst or a hot pretzel,” Walker said in a release. “We aim to provide an atmosphere that feels like Germany in Midtown Memphis.”

Loeb Properties Inc.’s Aaron Petree represented his firm in the lease negotiations while Pat Surrat of Crye-Leike Commercial represented Schweinehaus.
