Berlin (dpa) – Chancellor Angela Merkel‘s Bavarian affiliate party
the Christian Social Union (CSU) has ordered 3,500 litres of beer
ahead of an Ash Wednesday rally that traditionally sees political
heavyweights engaging in a beer-fuelled war of words.
The event marking the end of Carnival, set to take place in the Lower
Bavarian town of Passau, will be at the epicentre of a series of
rallies held by Germany‘s mainstream political parties across the
state.
Political heavyweights including Merkel, vice chancellor and head of
the Social Democratic Party (SPD) Sigmar Gabriel, and CSU chief Horst
Seehofer are expected to speak at the events, where party leaders
usually attack each other with acerbic speeches.
Bernd Lucke, the controversial head of the country‘s burgeoning
right-wing conservative Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, kicked
off the speeches by poking fun at his party‘s conservative stance on
immigration.
“In Bavaria, I am a part of the immigration problem,” he said at an
event in the Bavarian town of Osterhofen.
